Abatec is a Somerset-based, multi-award-winning recruitment business that has been supporting the engineering and construction market for over 35 years, offering both permanent and temporary recruitment solutions.
The company is proud to have been supplying local civil engineering staff both on and off the Hinkley Point C site since being awarded a contract to support the jetty build in 2012.
Since that first placement, Abatec has placed over 200 professional engineers, management, or commercial staff, supporting the resources programme for Tier 1 and 2 contractors.
While most of Abatec’s work has been on-site – including recruiting for the four park and ride sites, the main earthworks package, concrete production facilities and on site activities with the SIA framework – the company has also benefitted from many off-site opportunities, too.
Major off-site work packages have included the concrete segment factory operations in Avonmouth, where there are over 40,000 concrete segments being made for the construction of the three tunnels under the seabed that will supply the two reactors at Hinkley Point C.
Director, Rob Dyer, said: “As a local business, we are proud to support our clients that are delivering complex, civil engineering work packages by identifying the best talent to deliver the works. We feel we are playing our small part in the supply chain by contributing towards the local employment market, and the development of a world-class low-carbon future.”
He said the Hinkley Supply Chain Team had been instrumental in sourcing, preparing, and facilitating supplier engagement and keeping Abatec updated with on-site developments.
“Without attending the regular supply chain team events, Abatec wouldn’t have the vital information we need to provide our services. It has helped us gain a better understanding of the behaviour and culture on site, which is vital and assists us in identifying the right workforce,” Rob said.
He added: “Abetec would highly recommend the Hinkley Supply Chain Team, they have been instrumental in providing us with the latest news and updates on-site, giving Abatec valuable insight into what is happening next on-site and general sign posting.”
In fact, work has gone full circle for Abatec, as the company was founded when it secured design work packages at sister station Hinkley Point B over 35 years ago.
This is particularly close to home for the company’s Civil Engineering Team Leader, David Hughes, who is responsible for all recruitment on-site. His father was one of the Shift Managers, for EDF – helping to run B site for 30 years.
