In a year that has been very different at the Hinkley Point C construction site, the usual end of year film has been changed to reflect the efforts of the Somerset workforce during the Coronavirus pandemic.
Presented by the site’s full-time chaplain, Ewen Huffman, workers from bus drivers to catering assistants take centre stage in the film that thanks everyone who has kept the site and community safe. Among those featured are staff from local caterers Somerset Larder, HOST accommodation and the Somerset Passenger Solutions bus company.
The site implemented a range of protective measures, as well as enhanced testing capability, in order to keep the workforce and local community safe. Despite an initial halving of numbers on site and changes to normal working practices, the project decided to keep local suppliers fully employed.
The film also shows the two reactor units rising out of the ground after the completion on target of the second base this summer and unit one’s turbine hall taking shape. A forest of cranes, including the huge Big Carl, have completed 700,000 lifts in the year, while the first of three tunnels under the Bristol Channel has just this week (W/C 7 December ’20) been finished.
